Who is Ryna Malik?
Coming from an immigrant family, my roots are from Pakistan, but my identity is American. Growing up with a talented grandmother who knew the inner-workings of a sewing machine in her sleep, my earliest memories are sitting by her side in her sewing room. Fashion became the factor that connected me with my Pakistani culture as well as my American identity. I describe myself as an explorer, known to push boundaries and delight in unexpected discoveries, embracing a “no limit” philosophy. In extreme determination to continue on the path of success many avenues have lead me to gaining experience in the fashion realm, beyond the classroom through internships and a study abroad program. I am a working towards completing my B.A. in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Mass Communications, specifically media studies. Overall, representation and actively seeking opportunity to grow professionally are driving forces behind the creative aspiring fashion professional I consider myself.
Interning for NYFW
Despite having to take two weeks off from school, I made the decision to Intern during NYFW for Nili Lotan this past market in February. Although, there was pushback from the fashion department regarding the attendance policy, I knowingly took the grade drop to pursue the unique opportunity to intern for a luxury company. By doing so, I was able to learn about the wholesale side of the fashion industry during market week. Navigating public transportation, housing, and balancing school were challenges I accepted to pursue my passion.
Pakistani Heritage
Growing up in a Pakistani household meant religious parents, strict rules, and conforming to Pakistani traditions. However, I always felt a sense of connection to my culture through clothing the most. As my personal values did not align with my household beliefs, fashion not only became the intertwining factor for a sense of belonging, but also was where I pushed boundaries the most. I unlearned what was taught and created a new set of rules for myself- a defining aspect of who I was going to be versus who my family wanted me to be. In terms of fashion I am passionate about creating diversity by paving the path for those who come after, while respecting those who came before.
